I heard back from Umstead State Park this morning that my special activity permit has been approved! That's right, the SB is going legit in 2009. We will have a reserved shelter at the Reedy Creek entrance, and we will be an official approved activity, on Saturday July 4th, 2009. We have permission to set up the aid station in the horse parking lot. The run will be limited to 30 individuals, and the total group size will be limited to 50 individuals. If you want to join the fun but do not want to run, join us for the day-long picnic and ice cream social.
I will post an application on-line within a week or so. I will accept entries for runners who are known to me as responsible and fit. This means that I know you, or someone I know and trust knows you and trusts you. So, get ready! It's going to be HOT!.
Read below for the event description that I submitted to the park:
“Sweaty Butt” July 4th Group Trail Run and Picnic
This special activity is an informal, semi-organized social activity and group trail run. I, Michael Day, am the activity organizer. I am organizing the activity as an individual, not under any group or club affiliation.
Participation in this activity is only by invitation from myself. I will only invite persons known to me.
The activity includes (1) a day-long picnic and (2) a day-long run on the Company Mill and Sycamore trails.
The running activity will begin at 7:30 am on Saturday, July 4th. I am assuming that, July 4 being a Saturday, the Reedy Creek gate will open at 7:00 am.
All runners will be required to “leave no trace,” and I will not allow any markings of the trail or littering on the trail. The running activity will start at 7:30 am and continue until 4:30 pm. The maximum number of runners will be 30.
By 8:00 am runners will be distributed across the trails and will not be in a single group. After the first hour, runners will be in groups of four individuals at most. I will instruct runners to stay in groups of four or less after the first hour of the activity.
Runners will complete a distance of either 10, 20, or 30 miles according to their own preference, provided they are off the trails by 4:30 pm. I will provide ice for the runners at Reedy Creek Shelter #2 (which I have reserved), and in the Horse parking lot on the other side of the park. Both of these locations also have water. I will provide a scale so that runners may weigh themselves once every 10 miles to determine their own hydration status. Tracking weight during a run is the most reliable method for determining under or over hydration during exercise.
Runners accepting the activity invitation must sign a release of liability and agree that they will provide their own supplies, will not litter nor mark the trail, will abide by park rules, and that they understand the weather may be hot the first week of July. I will only invite runners known to me as responsible and appropriately conditioned individuals.
I will shuttle food and other supplies that the runners provide for themselves from the Reedy Creek entrance to the Horse parking lot. Runners will therefore have access to supplies every five miles (at the Horse parking lot and at the Reedy Creek entrance).
The Picnic component of the activity will include both runners and non-runners. I have reserved the smaller shelter at the Reedy Creek entrance. Runners are limited to 30, and the total group including runners and non-runners will be 50 or fewer persons.
