Lisa Bliss' Toenail Removal Surgery

photo: Lisa Bliss

Most ultrarunners frequently lose toenails. Lisa Bliss is an experienced 100 mile veteran (and medical doctor) who has had both of her big toenails surgically removed. She has documented the surgery and recovery using photographs. All of you aspiring 100 milers out there pay attention! If you visit Lisa's photo site you'll see lots of great ultrarunning photographs.

Short of having the toenail surgery, the best remedy for black toenails is to have the right running shoes. I went four years without having two big toenails at the same time until I started running in Asics Tral Attacks almost a year ago. I completed several rugged trail runs, including Laurel Valley and the Cascade Crest 100 without having any toenail damage and I still have 2 big toenails today.
